According to confirmed reports, former NFL player Junior Seau committed suicide at his Southern California home on Wednesday.
Officers responded to a medical aid call at the home of the 43-year-old former San Diego Charger in the 600 block of South Strand Boulevard at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday.
NBC is reporting that Seau died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
There is speculation that Seau’s death might be linked to other former NFL players who suffered from brain-related injuries during their playing career.
Most recently, 62-year-old former Atlanta Falcons player Ray Easterling shot himself last month in his Virginia home. His wife claims the former safety developed symptoms of dementia after his football career. Also, former Chicago Bears player Dave Duerson was found dead in his Florida home last year from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
In October of 2010, Seau sustained injuries when his SUV crashed at the bottom of a cliff in Carlsbad, California.
Seau played 19 seasons in the National Football League, 12 with his hometown Chargers, before signing with the Miami Dolphins in 2003. He retired in 2009 as a member of the New England Patriots.
