As the clock strike midnight on Tuesday, DirecTV customers may be without their favorite programs such as, Jon Stewart, Jersey Shore, and Mob Wives, due to a dispute between the satellite carrier and Viacom.
A spokesman for Viacom Inc. who is the parent company of networks, MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, Spike, BET, and others, issue a statement on their blog website that, despite its best efforts to resolve this matter, DirecTV rejected a proposal that would renew their contract. Nearly 20 million DirecTV customers will not have access to 26 Viacom channels including MTV and Nickelodeon if a new deal isn’t struck by midnight Tuesday.
This is the latest stand-off between DirecTV and a media company, earlier this year they had a similar issue with the Fox Network.
According to sources, Viacom wants subscribers to pay a 30 percent increase to have the pleasure to view its content on DirecTV. The satellite provider believes that Viacom is overvaluing its product, especially since ratings have dipped on some of their network channels such as Nickelodeon.
As a DirecTV subscriber, I would hope that this could be resolved sooner than later. I have a son who watches Nick Jr. and a wife who’s addicted to the music channel formerly known as VH1, for their slew of Reality Television programming. Besides, with the dog days of summer upon us, what else can we do to continue to rot our brains with mindless programming? Fox News? I think not.

Come on multimillionaire corporations who make most of their money from us subscribers, let’s get this done!
Are you a DirecTV subscriber? If so, are you nervous about this potential blackout?
I’ve been sitting in my living room watching Nick Jr., and this black block of text, presumably from the Viacom Company, that implores DirecTV subscribers to call the satellite provider to… I’m not really sure what that want us to do. Tell them what exactly? From what I understand, you guys want to charge up to 30 percent more in fees for your network channels.
Then at the bottom of the screen, there is a crawl that displays how Viacom wants to charge us more for their programming and COULD pull the plug if they chose to.
Please resolve this. It’s hard to watch our favorite shows with all this extra content on the screen.
