Happy Cannabis Day! Today is 4/20 (or 420) and marks the day that Cannabis counterculture, medical patients, legal reformers, and entheogenic spiritualists join together to lit a spliff, bowl, and/or bong in an attempt to force political change or to just have a good time.
The origin of the holiday traces back to 1971, where a group of teens in San Rafael, California, who referred to themselves as the “Waldos” — due to their routine desire to just hangout by a wall outside their local high school.
The “Waldos” set out to find an abandoned cannabis crop and agreed to meet at the Louis Pasteur statue on the grounds of their school at 4:20 in the afternoon. The clan referred to the meetup as “420 Louis.” After several failed attempts to find the magical or fictional crop, the phrase was shortened to “420.”
Although there is no confirmation on whether the “Waldos” were ever able to find the crop, the phrase has evolved into one of the world’s most enjoyable pastimes.
So there you have it, the origin of 420. Now, go and enjoy yourself… not that you will remember any this by day’s end.
Oh and don’t forget to pass the hemp vodka!
